My little girl did it again today, the day I’ve begun to call “somber Saturday,” the day after we remember the crucifixion of our Christ. We began discussing the Easter season this morning because my daughter seemed a little perplexed by the fact that days like Good Friday and Easter Sunday are not always the exact same days of/in the year (like Christmas is). I explained to her that, though the dates are different from one year to another, the purpose of the days is the same–remembrance and celebration.
Then, we started to talk about exactly what I blogged about during Easter of last year. We talked about how Jesus’ disciples must have felt the day after Jesus was killed, which was also the day before Jesus was resurrected. And that’s when my little girl put the most profound thought out into the air around us. She said, “Mom, they must have been walking around with question marks over their heads.” Question marks indeed!
What do you do when your whole world is turned upside down? All of us have probably been there at one point or another or we will be sooner than we ever thought we would. There are so many people in my life right now, most of whom happen to be lovely women, who are going through things that I just wish I could fix somehow. The only thing I know for sure that I can do for them though is pray. Yes, sometimes prayer really is the only “fix,” the only “real” thing we can do for one other down here.
Surely the disciples prayed after Jesus took his last breath on the cross. I’d like to think so at least. Sometimes just crying out God’s name, which I have to believe some of the disciples must have done, is the only prayer we can muster. And sometimes, many times these days, I actually believe that simply saying Christ’s name is the most powerful prayer we can offer up to Heaven. As Holy Scripture tells us, there is indeed power in his name.
On that Saturday so long ago, on that Saturday full of question marks, perhaps the words preceding the question marks above the disciples’ and others’ heads were “The Christ of God.” Many must have been wondering, “Was he really?” Yes, he was and is! And now, on this side of Christ’s Resurrection, the words preceding the question mark above my own head and the heads of those near and dear to me appear quite often to be “How long Lord Jesus before you come.” Your people wait to see your face.
